Jesus Christ Superstar

Ballarat Lyric Theatre
March 1st – 11th 2018
Wendouree Centre for Performing Arts

It’s currently ‘Production Week’ for Lyric’s Production of the iconic Andrew Lloyd Webber / Tim Rice Rock Opera,  ‘Jesus Christ Superstar‘.

First released as a Rock Opera concept album in 1970 before its the Broadway debut in 1971, the show has had record-breaking performances & revivals ever since.

This will be the Fourth time Mystic have lit Superstar in Ballarat – all in different venues (although we were involved backstage in a 1982 Begonia production) and each time has had a different interpretation & its own challenges.

With Her Majesty’s Theatre closed for renovations, Wendouree Centre For Performing Arts is the chosen venue – and access to Lighting Bars once the set is in will be close to ‘non-existent’!

Another unique challenge is several of our usual staff are performing onstage – Not the least being Laurence Heenan playing ‘Jesus’, as well as operating the lighting desk during plotting sessions!

A veritable army of lighting techs (what IS the collective term for a group of LX Ops?) & able assistants descended on WCPA on Saturday 17th to rig all lighting whilst we had exclusive stage access & since then it’s been making sure that every fixture is addressed & working … then plotting.PRG V476 Control Console

The fact that lighting control for this show is via a PRG Control Console, rather the Grand MA or Strand 520 more recently used, adds another challenge level – as the most knowledgeable operator has JUST got married and his ‘second’ is ‘Jesus’!

But the show must go on …
And so it will!
